Children’s HIV ministry

Grandma’s is a Christian charity which gives practical support to children and families affected by HIV (regardless of their race, religion, gender, sexuality or any other factor). We currently work with over 200 families within Greater London area with around 60 families on the waiting list for a volunteer to be available to visit them.

We provide very simple and practical home-based childcare to our families, alongside day and weekend outings during school holidays. A volunteer visits a family for 3 hours a week - or every two weeks if it is on a Saturday. Visits may include collecting children from school or nursery and then giving them quality playtime and attention in the home (sometimes includes doing homework); taking children to the park to play, or trip to the cinema and other activities. We also have group outings during school holidays and a youth programme for teenagers who know diagnosis. Our focus is building relationship, showing unconditional love and support for our families. The quotes from Mum’s below give a taste of the difference that you could help make in their lives

  • ‘Volunteer is part of the family - ever Monday the house is amazing she changes the house. She is such a wonderful person, I can talk to her!’
  • ‘A guy volunteer makes all the difference - he is a good role model for the boys. He is an amazing man and so committed for someone of his age’
  • ‘Look forward to her visits, I appreciate every minute of the time when the burden is lifted, and my daughter has special time with her.’

We have branches of the work in Dublin, Bristol and East London. We also have 2 projects in India (one in Tenali, AP, South India and the other in Calcutta) reaching out to the poorest of the poor affected by HIV.
